Operating modes

Standard, Brager Expert and Brager Expert exhaust gases on the TIS Tronic 260U — what each algorithm optimises, which parameters it exposes, and which to choose.

Updated

The mode decides what the fan is chasing: a water temperature, a water temperature via an adaptive algorithm, or an exhaust gas temperature. Change it in Boiler settings → Boiler operating mode.

Standard

The boiler operates in two stages: Operation and Supervision, entirely on the values you set. No adaptation — what you configure is what it does.

In Operation, these settings determine the burn:

  • Maximum fan capacity
  • Minimum fan capacity
  • Threshold fan deceleration

In Supervision, once the set temperature has been reached:

  • Fan capacity in supervision
  • Fan blowing time (purge time)
  • Time between fan blowing cycles

The boiler moves back from Supervision to Operation when the water drops by the boiler hysteresis value. With a 60 °C setpoint and 2 °C hysteresis, the fan restarts at 58 °C.

The exhaust screen is locked in Standard

On the exhaust gas main screen, a padlock on the bar means the set temperature cannot be changed. Active STANDARD mode is one reason for that.

Brager Expert

A smart algorithm that automatically selects parameters to adapt the boiler's current output to the actual demand for thermal energy, while constantly striving to reach the set boiler temperature.

Only two parameters are exposed in the user menu:

  • Maximum fan capacity
  • Minimum fan capacity

Everything else is chosen by the algorithm. Use this mode when no exhaust gas sensor is fitted.

Brager Expert exhaust gases

The algorithm automatically selects optimal fan settings to maintain a constant exhaust gas temperature. This is what MBtek recommends for the UNI 60, with an exhaust setpoint of 160–240 °C / 320–464 °F.

Requires the PT1000 sensor

Operation in Brager Expert exhaust gases mode requires connecting the temperature sensor (PT-1000) to T3 and activating it in the controller main menu. The sensor is not included in the regulator standard kit.

Firing-up time

This mode adds one parameter: firing-up time.

It determines how long the exhaust gas temperature target is held at 300 °C. That drives the fan at the highest possible capacity, which ignites the fuel faster.

Why target exhaust temperature?

Exhaust temperature is a better proxy for combustion quality than water temperature.

  • Water temperature tells you how much heat has accumulated; exhaust temperature tells you how the fire is burning right now.
  • Too low an exhaust temperature means incomplete combustion and condensing flue gas — tar in the chimney.
  • Too high means heat is going up the chimney instead of into the water.

Holding 160–240 °C keeps the boiler in the band where combustion is complete but the heat exchanger is still extracting usefully.
